Civil Unions vs. Marriage

I think much of the problem with the recognition of same sex marriage is one of semantics.

A modest proposal. Since the purpose of "marriage sanctioned and performed by the state is primarily concerned with Rights financial medical etc. The term should be Civil Union. Thus every couple homosexual or heterosexual would be licensed for and given a recognition of Civil Union with all rights now accorded to Marriage.

Anyone desirous of a Marriage which I see as a spiritual or religious commitment would then do this privately if they so choose.
