Mind-controlled Prosthetic Arm

By Bjorn Carey and Michael Belfiore

Engineers develop a mind-controlled prosthetic arm dexterous enough to play piano

More than 130 veterans of the Iraq war now face the daunting challenge of learning to live with a missing arm. To make that transition easier, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or Darpa, has launched a $55-million project that pools the efforts of prosthetics experts nationwide to create a thought-controlled bionic arm that duplicates the functions of a natural limb. If all goes well, by 2009 the agency will petition the Food and Drug Administration to put the arm through clinical trials.

This summer the team hit a critical milestone when it finished Proto 2, a thought-controlled mechanical arm—complete with hand and articulated fingers—that can perform 25 joint motions. This dexterity approaches that of a native arm, which can make 30 motions, and trumps the previously most agile bionic arm, the Proto 1, which could bend at the elbow, rotate its wrist and shoulder, and open and close its fingers. A person wearing a Proto 2 could conceivably play the piano.

The next steps are to shrink the battery, develop more-efficient motors, and refine the bulky electrodes used to read electrical signals in muscles. As for making actual music, the wearer is on his own

How it Works

  1. Control System
Researchers are experimenting with injectible myoelectric sensors (IMES) that detect muscle activity and wirelessly transmit commands to the prosthetic arm. The setup eliminates bulky electrodes glued to the chest. A wire coil wrapped over the shoulder supplies wireless power to the implants and relays signals to computers in the prosthetic that decipher the command and tell the arm to move. The team is also considering implanting electrodes directly on nerves—or in the brain itself—to achieve more natural neural control by 2009.
  2. Power
Researchers are exploring a hydrogen-peroxide pneumatic system to replace electric motors, which are bulky, slow and weak. The hydrogen peroxide reacts with an iridium catalyst to drive the arm's movements. The wearer would install a fresh hydrogen-peroxide canister each morning.
  3. Flexibility
The Proto 2 performs 25 joint motions: The shoulder and wrist are capable of roll, pitch and yaw, the elbow can flex, and the fingers and thumbs bend at each knuckle. Each joint brings together two lightweight "bones" made of carbon fiber and aluminum alloys.
  4. Building blocks
Modular construction—shoulder to elbow, elbow to wrist—allows doctors to adapt the limb to patients' needs.

The iCar of Apple and Volkswagen

What would the iCar be like? This is the Big question for you. Continuing the trend of wild Cupertino-related rumors, a German magazine is claiming that Apple and Volkswagen have entered into discussions over a concept vehicle to be dubbed.

You guessed it. The iCar. Related Rumor that the two companies are in the early stages of planning for an entire line of new VWs that would incorporate Apple-sourced designs and features. Given that we've seen the firms collaborate in the past, this isn't too far out there -- though we wouldn't go wagering on this rumor, either. As you can see below, the Engadget gang chimed in on the news, but what do you think the iCar would be like?

Ryan: "Can hit 100Mph, can't hit 100Kbps."
Evan: "The scroll wheel would be hard to steer in sharp turns."
Paul: "Give it a few weeks and you should be breaking 25MPH no sweat."
Nilay: "It only uses one kid of gas!"
Josh: "I hear it doesn't have 3g either."
Chris: "Internal combustion engines were stupid until we decided to use them."
Dante: "White."
Philerweb: It Would be a user friendly just like windows or applle? what do you think? hehehe

Super X-Ray Vision "CTX"

A new medical-imaging system brings skeletons to life in 3-D

For most of us, the phrase "super x-ray vision" conjures a pair of spiral-print cardboard spectacles ordered from the back of a cereal box. But now an imaging system developed at Brown University delivers the real thing, combining computed-tomography (CT) scanners, x-ray video and computer software to give doctors and researchers a three-dimensional look at bones in motion.

Although several medical-imaging technologies already exist for peering into living things, each one compromises either speed, resolution or depth. CT scans, for instance, offer detailed 3-D views, but scanning is slow and requires the subject to stay completely motionless. A technique called fluoroscopy can create video by taking multiple x-rays in rapid succession, but it's limited to producing two-dimensional images and has much lower resolution than CT.

The new process, known as CTX imaging, combines both of these technologies to produce 3-D animations of bones in motion—walking, running, jumping. Though still in prototype form, the room-size system is already helping researchers to answer tough questions about animal biomechanics, such as how flight evolved in birds. It could also be a valuable tool for orthopedic surgeons, who might use it to plan better treatments for bone-, ligament- and joint-related injuries.

Elizabeth Brainerd, the biomechanics professor at Brown leading the CTX program, says that although the technology won't fit into a pair of glasses anytime soon, a commercial version of the system that produces real-time video should be ready by 2010.

How it Works

CTX imaging combines CT scans with x-ray video to produce 3-D animations. The process starts with a traditional CT scan of a subject—say, an alligator—to create a 3-D model of its bone structure. Then high-speed fluoroscopy records the gator in motion from two different angles. Researchers feed these two data sets into image-processing software, which merges them to produce an animation of bones in action from any angle. The 3-D view has resolution down to a tenth of a millimeter and captures motion at 1,000 frames per second.
